In 1884 the later Prime Minister, Lord Rosebury, calls the empire a “Commonwealth of Nations” while visiting Australia . In 1926 the UK and the dominions agreed that they are “equal in status” A lot of nations joined the new formel Commonwealth. The first member states joined in 1931 and were Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa.

There were two British Empire. The first began in 1620 with the landing of the pilgrim fathers and ended with the American-Independence War . The second began in 1815 after the Napoleonic Wars. Britian then took control over India, islands in the pacific , Australia and New Zealand.
